It pretty much depends on the niche of website. I will list some of the best free traffic generation methods.

1. Forum positing, traffic comes to website instantly, use descriptive signature links, post on relevant, or semantically related forums

2. Blog commenting, good way to generate traffic, also works well for link building, don't pay too much attention on dofollow or no-follow links. Use quality Gravatar this works well for link building, traffic generation and brand building

3. Social networks - Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, this are my top 3.

4. Youtube, quality video can easily become viral and bring traffic.

5. Social bookmarks - no not underestimate social bookmarks, again depending on the niche Reddit, StumbleUpon, Delicious can be great traffic boosters.
