Between Black and White: Gray Hat SEO Practices

In the Know: Gray Hat SEO

The goal of search engine optimization is to get a website achieve higher rankings in Google's search results list. Because Google constantly modifies their algorithms for Gray Hat SEOindexing, web developers have come up with white hat SEO and black SEO practices, also known as ethical and unethical SEO practices respectively.

Gray hat SEO was born from the white hat and black hat SEO practices. Some web developers say that gray hat SEO is the use of both white hat and black hat SEO, while others state that they are merely bending the rules of SEO a little bit. However, gray hat SEO can also be seen as the “black hat SEO of the future” because Google's algorithms have not figure out how to spot them yet. The use of these methods may be risky because there is a big chance that once Google finds out about them, the website using them will be penalized.

Gray Hat SEO Practices

Using cloaking for exclusive content

Cloaking is a SEO technique where a website displays one form of content to the site visitor while showing a different one to the search engine algorithm. One way to legitimize the use of cloaking is if a website has exclusive content that is available to members or subscribers only. To avoid getting penalized, a web developer can provide a sample of the exclusive content to non-members and allow the search engine algorithms to see that.

Duplicating content for resource websites

Duplicating content is when a website copies the content of an existing website and pastes it on his or her own website in hopes of getting better rankings. Because of the proliferation of websites with duplicate content, Google's algorithms use sophisticated filters to find duplicate websites and remove them from their results list. One way to get around this is by using resource websites. Resource websites contain a list of articles on a specific topic and Google will not penalize a website if the duplicate is on a resource website.

Tweaking the designs on the website

One way to get Google to think that a website has fresh content is by making small changes in the website from time to time. This is possible even if the website content is more or less the same.

Using forums and comment postings for linking

Another way for web developers to get higher rankings for their website is to comment on forums and blogs and find a way to link back to their website. It will require some writing skills so the comments appear real and not just generated by some software.

Use these techniques, only if you know what you are doing! It is not recommended to go against Google best practises guides!
