If your business does a lot with email correspondence of any type, something you might want to think about is getting an autoresponder program or service of some sort.  The principle behind autoresponders is that you only have to write something once, then you can attach it to a predetermined database of emails and have them all go out at once. 

There are many reasons why someone would want to use an autoresponder.  Of course we mentioned the first one, being to send a bunch of emails out to someone at once.  The reason an autoresponder is good for this, especially if you use a service, is that autoresponder services have already been added any spam blocker that's out there.  They require a double opt-in check for anyone who wants to sign up to receive what you have to offer, and all of it can happen while you're not around.

That brings up reason number two.  If you happen to write a periodic email newsletter, new subscribers can request it at any time without your being around to have to add them to your list.  Once the person verifies that they want it, your autoresponder will send them your latest missive automatically.

Reason number three for having an autoresponder is if you create a series of emails that you want to go out to people.  It could be a program you've set up, or maybe it's a marketing scheme where each person gets an ever increasing series of emails highlighting a special event or product that you're about to launch.  You can program the dates you want your autoresponder to send out these emails, or you can program how many days in between each email should go out if it's a series. 

Some autoresponder programs or services allow you to add all the email addresses you already have, while others will make people resubscribe once you've added those email addresses.  This is both a good and bad way to not only verify which addresses are still good, but to see how much continued interest there seems to be in what you're offering to people.  If you have a large newsletter base and change over to an autoresponder, you might find that many people won't resubscribe because they haven't really been reading it anyway, but haven't taken the time to unsubscribe.  This can be disheartening, but it's probably better to know how effective your campaign really has been.

The top two autoresponder services on the market are Aweber and Constant Contact.  Both of them charge a monthly rate for services if your list is over a certain amount, but both also have a free program if your list is under a certain amount.  That program, however, has advertising, which you might or might not care is there.  Of course, there are other services and programs, including those you can purchase on your own and add to your website, but if you're not technically advanced, and don't have the services of your IT person to immediately rely on all the time, you might not want to go that route.

Give serious thought to an autoresponder for your business.  Depending on what you do, it might boost your business in ways you can't imagine.
