What is a Secure Private Cloud?

Public Clouds are readily available from Amazon, Google, Microsoft, HP, Dell & Memset amongst others. These Public Clouds use Virtualisation technology to store multiple instances of virtual machines on large pools of physical servers within geographically dispersed data centres. This will mean that customers will be running their virtual machines alongside other customers on the same physical server without any knowledge of who the other customers are or what they're using it for. Not everybody wants to share the hardware that their systems run on with unknown neighbours. However, people do still want to take advantage of the efficiency savings derived from using the Cloud. That’s when you seek out a Secure Private Cloud. That’s not to say Public Clouds are insecure, they are and work very well with the hypervisor separating virtual machines from one another to all intense purposes the same as if they were on separate physical machines. So if the hypervisor keeps you separated what’s the big issue? Well, legislation may mean that if you store sensitive data you may not be allowed to keep that data on hardware you share with others. Alternatively you may work with partners who have strict security procedures from preventing you...

Choosing an Online Storage Provider

Deciding which online storage provider to select can be a daunting prospect. Knowing what to look for simplifies the decision. History - Long-standing companies often provide better levels of service, and are also less likely to succumb to economic changes than newer companies. Reliability - Selecting a company offering a 99.9% up-time guarantee, combined with a definite money back guarantee should they fail to meet this promise, is advisable. Security - Some companies use 128-bit SSL encryption to protect data during uploads, downloads and storage. Others encrypt data using the more advanced 256-bit SSL or 448-bit Blowfish options, and are therefore preferable. Location - To effectively protect data against localised disasters (fire, storm, flooding), data centres should be a minimum of 50 to 100 miles away from the user's location. Back-up - Daily automatic back-ups should be provided. Options should also include automated back-up when files are modified/ saved, and - ideally - regular back-ups across multiple servers at the data centre. Compatibility - Occasionally, download of software enabling back-up routines is required. Compatibility with user systems should be ensured. Storage - For large/ rapidly increasing amounts of data, services offering unlimited space are preferable. Plans offering space above current requirements...

Malicious Intrusions Web Hosts Have to Deal With

Websites are under attack. In fact, according to what's reported, it seems like these attacks are happening now on a daily basis. And when it comes to who is behind them, perpetrators range from political activists looking to make a statement, to enterprising criminals hunting for soft targets and spammers after a quick buck. So what form can these attacks take? And what can be done by web hosts to mitigate the likelihood of an attack being effective? Denial of Service The most well-known of these intrusion attempts that web hosts have to deal with is the Denial of Service attack. A DOS attack is when a flood of service requests is sent from the attacking machine to the intended victim machine in order to prevent the victim machine from responding to genuine requests from legitimate machines on the network or internet. The flood of requests causes the victim machine to exhaust its resources in replying to these fake requests. Typically memory or CPU usage or band-width is the resource that becomes exhausted on the victim machine. But DOS also has a big brother DDOS. A Distributed Denial of Service attack is when multiple compromised machines act together to generate a...
