Learning to Write Programming Languages

Thousands of languages are spoken across the world, and in Manchester, England there are as many as 86 languages rumoured to be spoken in the city centre alone. Most of us speak just one languages, sometimes a bit of a second language – but one type of language in particularly has emerged and grown like nothing ever seen before. This type of language is spoken all over the world and is constantly evolving, changing and being taught at an ever increasing rate. The type of language I’m talking about of course, is programming. People of all ages can learn to ‘speak’ to computers and program them with a programming language, but, like learning another human language, it’s not always the easiest thing to pick up. Here are some quick tips on learning a computer language. Do your research! Don’t just dive in at the deep-end by picking some letters that sound impressive and choosing that language as the one you’re going to learn. Many different types of languages exist like object-oriented languages as well as scripts– so think about what type might interest you the most. Wikipedia and other websites are great sources of information on the types of language available....

Interview with a Social Media Manager

What is your job title and what industry do you work in? How many years of experience do you have in this field? I am the social media manager for The Denver Post in Denver, Colorado. I have been in this position for three years. I previously served as an account executive for a newspaper in central Florida. How would you describe what you do? What does your work entail? Are there any common misunderstandings you want to correct about what you do? I help my company use social media to deliver the news, build a community around our content, and sell access to our followers to companies who want to advertise their products or services. Our social media division generates revenue for the company that keeps our flagging print division in business. On a scale of 1 to 10 how would you rate your job satisfaction? What might need to change about your job to unleash your full enthusiasm? I would rate my job a 7. I enjoy the challenge of sales, but my portfolio of clients is very large and my days are primarily occupied by meeting with clients about their accounts. I have very little time to focus...

Advantages of Quality Backlinks

Backlinks are incoming links which you get from other websites to promote your site or blog. They are also termed as referrers or do-follow links or inbound links. Getting quality backlinks are important for two reasons, firstly these can gauge the kind of respect and eminence you have earned over the internet and secondly these help you to a great extent in improving your site rankings over popular search engines. So the higher the quality of your backlinks the more visible you become over the search engines. Conversely, if you have disreputable backlinks or do not have any, then your credibility over the internet is at stake. You simply have to put efforts to secure quality backlinks to enjoy a couple of benefits as discussed below. Improves your search engine rankings The moment you create your website it simply starts with zero backlinks and hence cannot be seen over different search engines. However, if you start building up backlinks consistently for a couple of months you can see your site getting indexed by the popular search engines which certainly improves your site rankings. If you want to outrank your rivals’ sites, try getting more number of quality links than them. It...

Interview with a Blogger

This is a true story as told to DiversityJobs, where you can find career interviews for the job you’ve been looking at and available positions in your desired field. I am a full-time blogger with my own website on Tumblr. My Tumblr blog is a collection of my amateur landscape photography and integrates FotoMoto technology to sell my artwork. I have been a blogger full time for the past year and a half. As a blogger, my work involves more than just the computer. I spend about 15 hours a week hiking and taking pictures for my blog. Then, I use editing software to fix any composition issues and to watermark my photos. I then go to my Tumblr page and post them. Finally, it is promotion time. I like my photography blog to have very little text and words and have the art speak for itself. So, I have to “speak for it” in other ways: through e-mails, Twitter, Facebook, and Google+. These lead my followers back to my Tumblr site. The biggest misunderstanding about what I do is that it is an isolating job. I am out in the field taking pictures and often have friends with me when...

Interview with an Online Technical Writer

This is a true story as told to LatPro.com, the worldwide leader in providing online employment resources for Hispanic and bilingual professionals. LatPro is the largest diversity employment site in the U.S. and the most complete personal career advancement service for Latino and bilingual professionals. I am a consultant technical writer in the transportation industry, and have worked in this field for the past 32 years. Currently, I am reviewing and editing maintenance documentation for commuter railroad cars. This documentation can take the form of descriptive information about what is being maintained, procedures about how to maintain this equipment, and parts lists of what would have to be replaced or repaired. The work itself is very detail oriented. The maintenance procedures are especially important as the safety of the maintenance workers is dependent upon how well the procedures are written. Most people I have met do not seem to have a clue as to what a technical writer actually does. There are so many facets to technical writing that it is easy to be misunderstood. I could be writing about Navy airplanes or financial software, and everything in between. I have always loved what I do, so I would definitely rate...
