WordPress SEO and Links

WordPress has some tremendous advantages built into it as far as search engine optimization goes. Some of the most important features have to do with how you structure links. Remember, when you put up a good article, the ideal situation is that people will read WordPress Permalinksit, like it and then link to it. You'll also want search engines to be able to link to your content easily, which means that the titles of your articles should relate to their content, as should the links that actually lead to them. WordPress actually makes these goals quite attainable.

Permalinks

Because most people do use WordPress in this manner, we'll go ahead and assume that you're putting your content up on a blog that you regularly update. The links to individual articles are referred to as permalinks. If you go to your Settings menu and then to your Permalinks menu, you'll see several different options as to how you want to structure your permalinks. Choose the entry named "Post name". This ensures that the link to your post has the same words in it as the name of your post, which is the entire point of taking all that time to work with keywords.

Why this Matters?

Search engine optimization is largely about making your website easier for users to navigate. It may seem like you're just trying to talk to search engines, but that's actually what search engines don't want you to do. Search engines want you to make a site that is useful for users and part of that is making a site easily navigable. By structuring your links so that the permalinks actually have the title of the article in them, it's easier for people to find the article if they can remember the title. This doesn't seem like a big deal for users, perhaps, but it really is.

Custom

You'll find another option in the permalinks menu labeled "Custom Structure". If you want to add your category name to your permalink structure, simply fill the following into the field: "/%category%/%postname%/". Do not include the quotation marks when you fill in the field. This means that, if you invested a lot of time in better organizing your site by adding sensible categories, those category names will show up in your links and users can use them to get to the post they want more easily.

This may seem like a little thing but remember that, even in the most professional premium WordPress themes., a lot of the most important features really boil down to little, intelligent and useful things.
