Welcome to the Wonderful World of Blogging! Let’s Get Started

With the technology available to us in the 21st Century it is quite common for people to fulfill their desire to record their thoughts, feelings, and opinions through an online web log better known as a Blog. It is the quickest way to exorcize emotional demons, promote yourself or your company, receive positive

and negative feedback, and maybe even get paid depending on the type of blog you are writing. The most attractive feature of blogging is that it is incredibly easy to do.

How to start

The best way to start your blog is to pick a topic and write about it. It is a simple as that. Some blogs are educational while others are border line soap operas. Over all it depends on what you are going for; the possibilities are limitless. A common issue is finding a topic to write about. When I hit this road block, I ask a question. The best way to find your blogging voice is to treat each blog as a conversation. What better way to begin a conversation then to ask a question?

Fact or Fiction…

When you have found your topic, of course perform the necessary research to back your entry. Make sure all of the data you are posting about is accurate and credit is given for the information obtained. If you are posting your feelings or discussing events of your personal life obviously this is not a necessary step to take, but never be afraid to utilize all available resources even if it is just to proof for spelling and grammar errors.

Dear Diary,

Try to keep your writing style and voice simple and consistent throughout the entry. Again, like you are having a conversation. If you are whipping out the thesaurus constantly and using words you wouldn’t use in your normal vocabulary, perhaps they don’t belong in your blog. When you read the entry, it should flow as if it is something you are speaking aloud to someone else. Your audience will be more apt to follow your train of thought and the points you are trying to make.

“Tune in Next Week.”

To build an audience and keep them coming back for more, it is imperative to post regularly. They do not have to be long entries but something. When a blog lacks a consistent inflow of posts it is more likely to fail. It can be a little time consuming to maintain a blog. Start with one blog and see how it goes. If you work 60 hours a week, have kids, a spouse, and a pet, that is all you may be able to handle.  Schedule some time on a daily, weekly, bi weekly or even monthly basis to make sure you are catering to your readers.

Are There Any Questions, Comments, or Concerns?

Remember that your readers are going to comment on what you have to say. Sometimes their comments are not going to be positive. Regardless of their tone, the comment should always be welcome and never taken personally. Everyone has something to say and allowing your readers to give you feedback on your posts makes it possible to keep in touch with your audience. You are in essence marketing yourself. Give them a reason to like you and want to read your entries.

Having Fun Yet?

The main reason you are blogging is because you like to write or express your feelings through written word. This should be something that you enjoy. Blogging should not be a dismal task or chore. If it turns into something that is painful to keep up with and you are forcing yourself, it will reflect in your writing. If it is a personal blog, it may be a good time to walk away for a bit. If you are writing to promote your business, I would recommend bringing in someone to maintain the blog for you.

Blogging provides an array of marketing, therapeutic, and social benefits but first and foremost it should be an experience you look forward to.

Have fun.
