Joomla 3.3 Hands on Preview

As it is listed in Joomla development strategy new release of Joomla is just behind the corner. I've spend the weekend testing Joomla 3.3.0 DEV edition and I have to admit that I am very impressed.

Hands on Preview Joomla 3.3.0

Joomla 3.3 ImprovementsBefore I start with the preview teaser, have to mention that last week Joomla team officially announced changes in Joomla Framework license from GPL to LGPG, this might not matter at all for users, but certainly is a step in the right direction in terms of development.

No let's talk about Joomla 3.3.0 core...

There are several major improvements, that put Joomla 3.3.0 on the top of innovation ahead top open source competitors:

  • Improved Microdata Formats

    • Thumbnails

    • Reviews

    • Ratings

    • Improved SEO capabilities

  • MooTools replaced by jQuery – this step was expected earlier, without a doubt there are more things that can be done with lighter jQuery than heavier Mootools. Actualy MooTools were used at Admin Back-end only, but still an extra JS library means heavier website.

  • Every area customizable. Literally mean that everything can be edited at front-end and back end. Practically even modules will be editable in the front-end.

  • Cloud API integrationeasy integration with Cloud services like Amazon S3, Dropbox, Google, and others...

  • Improved security

    • Joomla 3.3 require PHP 5.3.1+

    • Two factor authentication

    • BC crypt password hashing

  • Better cashing

When Joomla 3.3.0 Will be Released?

Official website have pushed the following dates:

  • 1 April - Beta 1

  • 8 April - Beta 2

  • 15 April - Release Candidate (RC)

  • 22 April - Joomla 3.3 Release

… and as I know Joomla development community, they never fall a day behind the schedule and during my test of dev version, I can say that Beta 1 will be very stable release.
