DDoS Attacks from 2011 to 2012

When a business experiences a DDoS attack, it places stress on the systems and people responsible for maintaining them, as well as causing damage to the business. When a DDoS (distributed denial of service) attack happens, a malicious actor attempts to make an entire network go down. Website, email, voicemail, or anything accessed by the server under attack will be inaccessible to users. The ultimate goal of the attack is to make the system unavailable to the users that depend on the system. Over time, DDoS attacks have changed and intensified. As malicious actors become more sophisticated, attacks become more destructive. To understand how attacks have changed between 2011 and 2012, review the infographic below. The graphic makes some interesting comparisons: Note the increase of DDoS attacks between 2011 and 2012. Also note the increase in infrastructure DDoS attacks between 2011 and 2012. Finally, note that the average bits per second (bandwidth) and average packets per second during attacks increased in huge amounts. On The Road to Affordable Marketing through Social Media

There are many people who aren’t really aware of what social media is. When you mention social media the first thing you will think of is your Facebook or Twitter account, an interactive platform that allows you to interact, share and exchange information with your friends and family. Social media is so much more and is a virtual network or community which gives you the ability to exchange information, inform and update. This means that a site such as YouTube is also considered a social media network, even though you are not having conversations with the other person, their video blog is a way that they share their information and a way for you to update yourself on various trends and developments. Blogs are another popular social media choice, through blogs you can inform your target audience through interesting written words which can link back to your website, increasing traffic and generating new leads. One of the many ways to create awareness is by using guest blogging services, this is where professional writers write on your behalf. Usually they will write something engaging and interesting about your industry which will then be loaded onto a blog site for all the viewers...

Is File Sharing All About Piracy?

File sharing is the lifeblood of the Internet, or so some say. Whether you work in the IT industry or you are "simply" an avid technology user, you will not escape the fact that file sharing is an integral part of online activities. From the innocuous act of giving family and friends access to photos of your most recent vacation to uploading the latest episode of the [insert name of popular TV series here] - file sharing is at the heart of these activities. Photos, movies, short videos, books, software, knitting patterns, legal document templates - these and so much more are shared on a regular basis, by people all over the world. It's much like comparing the Internet, and file sharing platforms in particular, to a physical meetup place where people go to interact and swap goodies. With the recent spate of legal troubles hounding file sharing platforms, though, the question of piracy and illegal activities arises. Take for example, one of the latest and most controversial platforms: MEGA. Founded by Kim Dotcom, the founder of taken down Megaupload, MEGA has risen in popularity - no surprise there, but it also has gotten the attention of the authorities. To have...

How Important is SEO for Ecommerce Sites?

Are you an online retailer? Think SEO doesn’t matter? Uh…think again. SEO isn’t just for content-oriented sites anymore. Actually, it never has been. SEO is critically important to the success of your ecommerce venture. You want more customers, right? And one of the keys to more customers is to get new visitors. Sure, you can rely on word-of-mouth referrals, but that will only get you so far. Why miss out on the thousands of prospects you could gain with a little SEO? But – you must be careful. JCPenney and Overstock are two perfect examples of SEO gone wrong. Both major online retailers made flubs when it comes to white-hat vs. black-hat SEO techniques (at least in the minds of the Google Gods) and were penalized as a result. There are tons of learning opportunities we can garner from high-end retailers. Many major e-commerce vendors get a pretty significant chunk of their traffic from search, including Amazon, WalMart, Target…even Apple and Netflix. Take a look at the infographic below for all the details. Click to Enlarge UpCity is a robust SEO Software and education platform. Find your Local SEO Report...

A Decent Idea of How Everyone Spends on SEO

The “How Much Do You Spend On Online Marketing” infographic put out by InMotion Hosting is fairly accurate. For people new to online marketing, it offers a good idea on what you invest in with free or cheap hosting, though may not be so accurate when it comes to high-end and what they refer to as “top level elite hosting.” The reason I say this is because I don't believe that VPS and dedicated hosting can be accurately represented by this sort of breakdown. While it is stated that both obviously use more bandwidth, there's a clear issue that arises when you look at sudden drops in categories of spending. Click to Enlarge For example, take a look at the spread of overall spending in the advertising category. From the cheapest hosting to the most expensive, the amount spent is relatively even. This makes sense and acts according to what is expected. The problem comes when you compare that spending to the SEO and social media categories. The average spent by high-end hosting is half of what mid-range hosting spends when it comes to SEO. For social media,...

The Health of The UK Web Startup Scene

This inforgraph breaks down the state of the UK’s web startup scene, including interesting stats on how long it generally takes a company to get on its feet and how even struggling companies may find themselves as targets for acquisition by larger companies. UK companies find it difficult to make any headway in web businesses as American companies dominate the field. UK companies are looking to combat this by taking to social media more and more in order to get their message out there.  The costs involved in getting a start up off the ground are also prohibitive, as a fully formatted beta version will cost between 100 and 350K before the product is even launched. These high start up costs are not helped by London’s high cost of living. So start ups looking to be successful will need deep pockets and a lot of motivation to make their presence felt. This infographic was created by Subtle Network Design and Marketing. It highlights the idea that on any given day, any SEO can win the battle for top position. Each strategy has it's strengths and it's weaknesses. In many cases it comes down to circumstance, chance and perhaps just a roll of the dice. Click to Enlarge The graphic also tries to address the tension that exists between so called white hat and black hat SEO's. In their opinion, the real "bad guys" are not SEO's but rather the large and small businesses seeking to steal in the name of SEO. No matter what your opinion is, it can be agreed that this graphic is pretty dang funny. The cards are entirely unique, and it’s a bit humorous to see how certain strengths and weaknesses can blend together. Affiliate Sales Compared - A Post Penguin And Panda Health Check

You would have thought that a lot of the affiliate sites would have been suffering since Google had clamped down on the easier ways to get links and the quicker ways to gain rankings. Affiliates (unfairly in a lot of cases) are tarnished with the ‘churn and burn em’ brush – but in reality a lot of affiliates are quietly going about their business producing high quality sites that Google likes and is willing to rank. The three updates that you may have thought would have had an impact on the affiliate sphere would be: Panda – designed to help the sites with better content and design rank above the kind of sites that were throwing pages up for rankings rather than users – famous losers include sites like Ezine Articles Penguin – designed to limit the possibility of ranking well by partaking in low quality link building – any site that did so, not only run the risk of issues with ranking but could be de-indexed completely. EMD Update – this was designed to cull the sites from the search results that were unfairly ranking with an exact match keyword domain. If you had an EMD with decent content there...

Internet Marketing Keywords

Avoid choosing keywords that are very broad. Keyword can be broad even if they have more than one word. The fact of the matter is that it is not how well the site ranks for a certain word, or even the amount of traffic a site attracts from the ranking, but the number of potential customers who visit the site. This basically means that one thousand suffers cannot be worth as much as a single qualified lead. A good idea is to use keywords that can filter the volume of meaningless raw hits while attracting visitors who are interested in whatever your company or site is offering. This therefore means that you should select keywords that are specialized so that you can reduce competition for the words' ranking in search engines. For instance, adding the name of the location of your business (e.g. city) to the web pages is a very appropriate way of attracting more qualified traffic. Good keywords should not only bring traffic to your site but also attract targeted traffic that will end up with a purchase. Eric Welke is fulltime small business consultant and affiliate...

Creating the Ultimate Infographic

You don't need me to tell you how effective a seriously good infographic can be. They're becoming even more and more popular as businesses realise this too, which is why getting yours to stand out is getting even more difficult. Before you even think about loading up your graphics software, you need to make sure that you've got something good to say. It's no good having a flashy piece of art if it hasn't got any relevant content; people might like the look of it, but they certainly aren't going to share it. You can get away with things that are completely obscure, but only if the idea is really good, and you still need to plan ahead. The information could be anything from statistics, to a guide, to the explanation of a process. Gather together all of the infomation that you want to communicate, and cut it down to be exactly what you need. Statistics can be hard on the eye, and picking out the most important or eye-catching figures is generally the best route to take. Graphs and pie charts work especially well if you've got a lot of data that you need to display cleanly. Actually designing the...

Here I will list some link building ideas along with our infographic related to diversifying link building strategies. Clink Thumbnail to Enlarge Source diversity Building links from various sources is essential factor. There are several good advantages for doing this. One reason is that major search engines value this type of link building diversification. If all your backlinks come from a single type of sites for example blog comments, is more likely to look like spamming and trying to manipulate search engine results. If you have links from multiple types, it looks more natural and prove that website have some value.
